In advance of a great post I'm working on, I would like you to check out this video, Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles. Reyner Banham was a British architectural professor who taught in Los Angeles during the seventies and eighties. During his tenure, he wrote one of the seminal books on Los Angeles, Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies. It is a short book but essential to understanding the City of Angels. In 1998, writer Mike Davis wrote a sort of update to Mr. Banham's book, The Architecture of Fear. Whereas Mr. Banham's book is a celebration of his adopted city, Mr. Davis, a Southerb California native, imagines a city on the precipice of doom. If you get a chance pick up both books and read them. They definitely will provide with a great alternative look at Los Angeles. In the meantime, enjoy the video.
