Super Tuesday Wrap Up

Primary and caucus calendar map

Hello Everyone:

It is time for a Super Tuesday wrap up.  What a Tuesday it was, if you happen to be Democrat and Republican front runners Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, who each won seven primaries.  However, Mr. Trump's march toward the nomination encountered an obstacle in the form of Senator Ted Cruz, who won (as expected) his home state of Texas, Oklahoma, and the Alaska Republican Caucus.  Meanwhile, Ms. Clinton swept the Southern States and Massachusetts primaries while Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders won his home state, Oklahoma, Minnesota, and Colorado.  The other big news is Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida) finally won a primary-Minnesota.  What does this all mean in the greater scheme of things.

If you are Ben Carson and Ohio Governor John Kasich, you are reconsidering continuing your campaign.  The map on the left shows which states were won by the top three Republican candidates.  While Senator Rubio might be breathing a momentary sigh of relief, he has to be focusing all his attention on winning his home state's primary otherwise his campaign is just about finished.  Senator Cruz looks as though he could present a formidable challenge to the Trump juggernaut.  No doubt the Republican party establishment is shaking in it boots over the prospect of Mr. Trump being the party standard bearer in November.  One possibility is that the moderate Republicans will line up to vote for Ms. Clinton, not because they necessarily agree with her but because they do not want to see a President Trump.  Dr. Carson has already indicated that he does not see a way forward in his quest for the White House and will not participate in Thursday's candidate debate in his home state of Michigan.  This seems to indicate that he is going to end his campaign.  Meanwhile, Gov. Kasich intends to remain on the campaign trail, for how long is anyone's guess.

Over on the Democratic side of the world, Hillary Clinton dominated the night winning seven out of eleven states in play.  This gives her a commanding lead in the delegate count.  Senator Sanders remains a strong opponent but has a lot of territory to make up for in the delegate count.  What this tells Blogger is that his message is resonating among voters.  Senator Sanders has already succeeded in pushing Ms. Clinton toward the left of her positions on certain issues.  They may resonate well with younger voters.  If anything, the popularity of Senator Sanders will ensure that the Progressive wing of the Democratic party will be a force to contend with before and during the convention.  Senator Sanders has already indicated that he is in it for the long haul but he will have quickly figure out a way to overcome the Clinton juggernaut if he is to continue to remain a viable candidate.

As always, Blogger encourages everyone to study the candidates and register to vote, if you have not done so already.  Coming this Tuesday, it will be Senator Ted Cruz's turn in the Forum
