Eavesdropping

I'm sitting in the lounge area of the The Park La Brea Conference center eavesdropping on a Ladies' quilting group chatting about the proposed redesign of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.  It's fascinating to hear their reactions.  One woman commented on the idea of cantilevering out part of the museum over the Tar Pits. She called it a "law suit waiting to happen."  Another woman, who teaches art, defended the proposed redesign.  She identified herself a member of LACMA.  The woman argued that proposed plan would open up the campus more.  Another comment made was how could the city and county of Los Angeles afford such a costly enterprise when it has no money to pay the bills.  I heard the same comment made on Friday when I was working out at my local park.  While this is true, some how, some way, there always seems to be funds for grand and not so grand projects.  The basic fact still remains, if you (re)build it, will they come?  Would a newly rebuilt LACMA still attract visitors?  My theory about that is it's not the container, it's the contained.  Mount great exhibits and people will come.  Overall the comments were a mixed bag of reactions.  Personally speaking, I'm taking a wait and see approach.
