Hello Everyone:

The Blogger Candidate Forum is here today with a few words on Night Three of the Republican National Convention.  The highlight of the evening was Vice President Mike Pence's acceptance speech.  VPOTUS Pence was joined on stage by Second Lady Karen Pence and the Trumps.  Honestly, after three nights of Trump infomercial, both Blogger and The Candidate Forum cannot help feeling like they were watching an alternate universe.  It is a universe where an unsurvivable hurricand,  COVID-19, and racial inequality do not exist.  A universe where suburbanites live comfortably in their nice houses with nice neighbors (i.e. no poor people), nice lawns, nice families, shiny happy people all brought to you by the president Mr. Donald Trump.  After three days, The Candidate Forum needs to take a step back and take a look the alternate universe that is the Republican National Convention.  First a question, are you a registered voter?

If you are a registered voter, good for you.  Do you plan to vote by mail?  If so, make absolutely sure your secure ballot is postmarked by midnight, October 15th.  If you can safely vote in person, pack your provisions, get in line, and stay in line.  You cannot be denied your right to vote if you are still in line after the polls close.  Not a registered voter?  Stop reading, go to usa.gov, register to vote, and come back to read the post.  Whatever you do, make a plan.  Text VOTE to 30330.  Thank you.

From the beginning of the RNC Convention peddled a grand illusion about the coronavirus pandemic.  Amy Ford, a nurse from West Virginia, spun quite a tale.  She said,

As a health-care professional, I can tell you without hesitation, Donald Trump's quick action and leadership saved thousands of lives during the COVID-19... (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020)

Really?

Through carefully edited videos and testimonials, this mind-boggling fictional narrative was reinforced.  However, the ultimate rewriting of history was left to the good soldier Vice President Mike Pence, who delivered his acceptance speech from historic Fort McHenry in Baltimore.  The speech, how can The Candidate Forum put this politely, was complete mockery of the truth.

The majority of the Gentleman from Indiana's speech was dedicated to describing VPOTUS Joe Biden as 

...a Trojan horse for the radical left [a supporter of] of open borders [and] a cheerleader for Communist China... (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020)

Oh?  Would someone please explain?

Ever the good soldier, the Gentleman from Indiana staunchly defended his boss' response to the virus, egregiously claiming that the president "has overseen the greatest national mobilization snce World War Two" (Ibid).  Never mind the fact that the president refused to invoke the Defense Production Act so that hospitals and clinics could have enough protective gear and ventilators instead of have to make do with what was available.  In VPOTUS Pence's version of events,

President Trump marshalled the full resources of our federal government from the outset.  He directed us to forge a seamless partnership with governors across American in both political parties (Ibid)

This version gives you the impression that this administration "reinvented testing, coordinated the delivery of personal protective equipment, and enacted an economic rescue package that saved fifty million American jobs (Ibid).

Perhaps the most mind boggling of all is that the Gentleman from Indiana was tasked as the head of the administration's pandemic response since February and, somehow, willfully blinded himself to the president's actual response to the pandemic: ignoring it, downplaying it, claiming it would disappear, peddling quack remedies (bleach anyone?), arguing with governors from political parties who had the audacity to call out the administration's lethal ineptitude, pushing states to reopen their economies despite not meeting the guidelines set down by the VPOTUS's own task force, petulantly refusing to wear a mask, and eventually getting board with the whole virus thing.  In the Trumpian worldview, not of that ever happened.

That Trumpian worldview is the Pence worldview.  The Gentleman from Indiana, instead, chose to focus on on a single significant policy decision the president made early--ban travel to and from China (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020).  Of course, the Gentleman from Indiana neglected to mention that it was partial ban--"more than forty thousand people subsequently entered the United States on flights from China" (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020).  Minor detail.  Another minor detail: The first confirmed cases in New York, that killed over 32,000 people (Ibid) arrived from Europe, not Asia (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020).  Nevertheless, throughout his speech, the Gentleman from Indiana portrayed the president as a man of action, a doer completely engaged, acting in the best interests of the American people.  VPOTUS Pence told America with a completely straight face,

Few Presidents have brought more independence, energy, or determination to that office (Ibid).

As the COVID death continues to spiral upward, it is doubtful that VPOTUS Pence's fictive interpretation of the administration's response will resonate much with the American public.  The voters are not blind, they can see and experience the reality of the situation for themselves.  One poll published earlier this week, showed that the president's approval rating over the handling of the virus dropped to 31-percent (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020).  Yet, the Gentleman from Indiana's acceptance speech will go down in history as a tangible example of "establishment Republicans like Pence have utterly capitulated to Trump, debasing themselves and their party in the process, and ultimately, betraying the country, which, in its hour of crisis, deserved honesty rather than pro-Trump spin" (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020).

The vice president's sad but predictable performance contradicted his behind the scenes action, extensively reported in an article published yesterday by politico.com.  The article reported that the Gentleman from Indiana was sometimes a

...force for moderation and fact-based decision (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020) regarding the virus.

For example, in mid-March, the vice president and other members of the task force went to the Oval Office to urge the president to approve nationwide social distancing guidelines.  However, the article went to report that "Pence slowed down the Administration's response by allowing officials with no health expertise to play a role in the task force's deliberations, and he felt pressure to appease Trump (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020).  An anonymous Administration source describe the Gentleman from Indiana,

Mike is the ultimate good soldier...He's not going to be pounding his fist on the table demanding change...That's not Mike Pence (Ibid)

Publicly, the Gentleman from Indiana continued to praise the president even when it is obvious to the most oblivious person a public health crisis of epic proportions was taking place.   Example, at a White House ceremony in April, he said,

Mr. President, with your leadership, the American people are beginning to step forward (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020)

In June, as cases were surging in California, Florida, and Texas, he claimed on the news program Face the Nation that the nation was 

...in a better place to respond [because of] the leadership that President has provided (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020).

Just last  week he told Good Morning America

I couldn't be more proud of the leadership President Trump has provided from the early days of the coronavirus pandemic (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020)

Yes, it is true.  Vice President Mike Pence spewed all that pablum with a completely straight face.

Thus, Vice President Pence's acceptance speech was a continuation of his bootlicking theme.  After singing the president's praises, the Gentleman from Indiana dismissed VPOTUS Biden's statement, last week, that there was no pandemic ending miracle on the horizon.  The Gentleman from Indiana boldly declared,

America is a nation of miracles,...We're on track to have the world's first safe, effective coronavirus vaccine by the end of this year.  After all the sacrifice in this year like no other--all the hardship--we are finding our way forward again (newyorker.com; Aug. 27, 2020)

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Vice President Mike Pence is that glorifies in toadying to a president who requires constant praise and approval, even when he does not deserve it..  The Gentleman from Indiana is indeed the good soldier and servant.  What is next?

Thursday evening is the grand finale of the Republican National Convention.  The president will make his acceptance speech from the White House South Lawn and then we have a break until after Labor when the final lap of the race begins.  Blogger will be back on Monday and as always, The Candidate Forum is here for you.

The Blogger Candidate Forum is back today with a wrap up of Night Two of the Republican National Convention.  Night Two mercifully dialed down the volume in an effort to present a more positive message of what a platform-less second Trump administration would like, after yesterday's vision of pending doom and gloom under a Biden-Harris administration.  The evening featured Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, First Lady Melania Trump, and two more Trump progeny Eric and Tiffany Trump.  Thus far, convention programming demonstrated the president's flaunting of generally accepted political norms, blurring the lines between government and politics--staging some of the main components of the convention at the White House.  The evening's speakers tapped into the culture war issues from the first Trump campaign to rally his base. Before we go any further, a quick question, Are you a registered voter?

In her key note address, FLOTUS struck an empathetic tone for a nation still grappling with the ravages of COVID-19.  Her speech stood from the other remarks which, for the most part, avoided a central issue that will weigh heavily on voters' mind. She spoke from the White House Rose Garden, addressing the twin overarching issues--pandemic and protest--telling the viewers,

I want to acknowledge the fact that since March, our lives have changed drastically.  The invisible enemy, COVID-19, swept across our beautiful country and impacted all of us... (npr.org; Aug. 26, 2020)

Without explicitly acknowledgment of the massive scale of the virus' toll--more than 178,000 American have died so far--FLOTUS demonstrated more empathy than her husband has since March.  She said,

My deepest sympathy goes out to everyone who has lost a loved one...I know many people are anxious and some feel helpless.  I want you to know are not alone (npr.org; Aug. 26, 2020)

Touching on the racial unrest, FLOTUS continued,

It is a harsh reality that we are not proud of parts of our history...I also ask people to stop the violence and looting being done in the name of of justice, and never make assumptions based on the color of a person's skin (Ibid)

Banal but it is something.  In an attempt to humanize her husband, FLOTUS delivered one of the least self-aware remarks that made Nikki Haley's remarks about the president not being a racist and Herschel Walker's description of the president as devoted family plausible by comparison.  FLOTUS reminded the viewers that her husband is a champion for people who felt alienated from government and would do it again.  She went on to describe her husband a what you see is what you get person:

Total honesty is what we as citizen deserve from our president...Whether you like it or not, you always know what he is thinking (Ibid)

Top Trump economic adviser, Lawrence "Larry" Kudlow, offered a more rosy view of the economic impact of COVID-19--despite "more than 20 million still unemployed and many retail and hospitality industries on the verge of collapse" (Ibid).  Mr. Kudlow enthused,

We've hit a turning point.  And now the recovery has begun (Ibid)

This myopic assessment contradicts the fact that the Trump administration has acknowledged that individuals and businesses still need more federal assistance. Mr. Kudlow gushed,

All signs point to a self-sustaining recovery (Ibid).

Mr. Kudlow, how can you say the nation is in recovery mode, when 20 million people are still without jobs, businesses have collapsed, and there is still no concrete plan for economic recovery?

Ever the showman, Mr. Donald Trump would not let the COVID-19 pandemic deny him a spectacle.  What better place better to put on a big show politics than the White House?

Typically, political event, like a convention, are held off campus to avoid questions about violations of the Hatch Act-which prohibits federal employees from working on political campaigns--were waived.  The White House legal counsel underscored the point by reiterating that the Hatch Act does not apply to the president and vice president, however past presidents from both parties have refrained from overtly political activities on White House grounds.  Nevertheless, political norms and the Trump administration operate in parallel universes.

In two separately taped video segments that were surprise additions to the convention, the president witnessed a naturalization ceremony, in the East Room, administered by acting Department of Homeland Security Chad Wolf.  The president used the moment to announce a presidential pardon.  Both episodes fogged the lines between typical White House business and political theater.  The spectacle reaches its grand finale on Thursday, when the president gives his acceptance speech from the White House South Lawn.

Following his president's lead, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also broke with precedent, to become the first American diplomat to participate in a convention in modern history.  Secretary Pompeo delivered his speech from Jerusalem, "where he was on a taxpayer-funded trip as part of his duties as secretary of state" (npr.org; Aug. 26, 2020).  In his remarks, he noted that the president took evangelical-approved action by moving the American embassy to Jerusalem.

 America in 2020 is a nation divided with a small margin of voter still undecided in the weeks of the election cycle.  The president needs his loyal base to turn out in big numbers this November.  To bolster those numbers, Tuesday evening's program featured two people that rowed against the media for ignoring them and the issues they care about.

One of the featured speakers was the president's middle son Eric.  Mr. Trump rowed at the media who he said,

...mocked these patriots--and 'the flyover states' in which they lived.  They ignored the Trump flags  (Ibid)

Nicholas Sandmann, the Catholic senior whose encounter with Indigenous activist Nathan Phillips last winter at a protest near the Lincoln Memorial launched widespread media coverage.  The circumstances of the interaction were widely misrepresented. He spoke about being "canceled."

The president's youngest daughter Tiffany Trump, said the media and technology platforms often misrepresent the true character of the nation.  She said,

If you tune in the media, you one biased opinion or another,... And if what you share does not fit into the narrative they seek to promote, then it is either ignored or deemed a 'lie,' regardless of the truth.  This manipulation of what information we receives impedes our freedom (npr.org; Aug. 26, 2020)

Is Tiffany Trump aware that the conservative media and technology platforms are guilty of doing the exact same thing she accuses the liberal platforms of?

In an attempt to boost the president's support among African American voters and the Republicans' image with minorities, Tuesday's lineup featured an array of young and minority speakers.  This was a concerted effort to counter the Democrats' narrative that president's policies have had mostly negative on African American and LatinX communities.

One the speakers, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, took issue with one of VPOTUS Joe Biden's early comments which he assumed the African American voters were a monolith.  Mr. Cameron told the viewers,

Mr. Vice President, look at me.  I am Black,... We are not all the same, sir.  I am not in chains.  My mind is my own, and you can't tell how to vote because of the color of my skin (npr.org; Aug. 26, 2020)

Forceful comments but they may have been undermined by criticism of his office's failure to properly investigate the death of Breonna Taylor.
